Inhale on the way down, exhale hard on the push up, and practice before you go.Need some advice about pushups at basic training?
do 10 reps, for 10 sets, the goal here is to do 100, in a work out. if you have to do less reps just and more sets until you get the 100, the easier it gets move the reps up, and then less set, Also by the last push up you should be burnt out. each time you work out. On last thing once a week you should see how many you can do with out taking a break, to measure how you are doing.
Lose weight Bubba ! That's the only thing that will help you to increase your push up numbers. Worse yet, I doubt that you can do even one pull up.
Get down to 200# and you will be able to do a hundred at a crack. I know, I'm 200#, and at seventy, I do 100 every day, followed by 100 sit ups !
I struggled at first with pushups but eventually it became my best event. I use to try and figure out what I could do to get that one extra push up and here is what worked for me. I am 5'6 180lbs and have a big chest so I know where you are coming from. First put most of your weight on your feet when you start this helps a little bit. Then when the test starts go as fast as you can, but make sure you learn to do them correctly first or else the grader will stop you. Use your arms and think about getting to about 55 before you take your first rest. Then cranck out 10-15 more and rest for a second. During the test you can arch or bend your back as a quick rest as long as both hands stay on the ground. by that time you will have 70 and about to max your event. Take the rest one at a time and soon you will be maxin your PU. I was at LW in 1996 and the Drills will make you hurt the day before your first PT exam so do not feel bad if you do not pass. The best way to prep is just do as many as possible at a time, burn your arms and chest out over and over. Eventually youll get there.
if you could get ahold of the perfect push up routine that would be GREAT. dont even bother using the handle things the routine is great...what i did is followed it but skipped most if not all my off days and i can do them great now and my bench press went up great as well. and like the other said EVERY DAY and do not quit. good luck and thanks for serving
start with 30 today and increase the number 5 every week, by sept 1 you should be fine. So hit the deck and give me thirty, NOW!! (lol).
seriously, good luck.

It's like learning to play the piano. The more you do it the better you get. Just keep doing push ups, and you will get better at it.
I've been doing them for 9 years and only can do 75 in a row... Just keep working on your push ups with the time you have left. (Before going to Boot Camp). I still struggle with them. EVERYONE DOES! :D
I will be at Fort Leonard in November. try to do about 200-250 push ups a day. and keep doing more than the previous day.
do them every day i know some answers are going to give you sets reps but i figure your smart enough to figure that out on your own just do them every day or other day at least 5 sets
