I am a proud father of two boys.A 4 and a 5yr old.And having trouble potty training my oldest still.I have taken a few approaches, like giving him treats or surprises for going to the bathroom. And sometimes take other mother's advises like leaving him in his own mess till he understands how nasty it is.But as usual,he still wont go to the bathroom.Any good parents out there that could give me advice or a new approach on this matter?I would greatly appreciate it.Thanks.....Any advice anyone could give me about potty training a 5yr old?
My son has Asperger's Syndrome (high functioning autism). I remember thinking, ';he's too big for the diapers.'; lol
I became determined one weekend that enough was enough. My 2 yr old daughter could use the potty so I knew I wasn't pushing something too early. I went to the public library and checked out about 3 dozen kids books and spent the next 2 1/2 days in the bathroom with him on the toilet and me in a chair reading to him. After using the potty we would go to the kitchen for snacks and water. Lots of water. About and hour later we went back to the bathroom. We stayed and read as long as it took (2 hours was the longest I had to wait).
I used cheerios to entice him to try some target practice. After each successful trip to the bathroom we would go for snacks and water and an hour later head back to the bathroom. Stop the water 2 hrs before bedtime and put a pull up back on. It worked for me. And once my son gained control of his functions he never had night time accidents. But I still kept the pull ups on at night for a month or so just in case.
It was very hard to give up all my other chores and keep my 2 yr old daughter entertained as well. But looking back it was only 2 1/2 days and it was worth it. My son is 15 now.
Good luck, and remain patient no matter what! Any advice anyone could give me about potty training a 5yr old?
Have you tried the potty chart? You make a chart with each day of the week in it and explain to him each time he uses the potty on that day he gets a sticker and when he has accidents he loses a sticker and that if he goes poop in potty he gets 2 stickers and at the end of the week if he has a full chart you take him out to some place special with big boy underwear on instead of his pull ups.It worked with my 4 yr old she is now 5 occasionally has accidents when she is sick but sleeps through the night I also would not put pull-ups on her when she was training she wore big girl underwear. So it seemed to work had her trained in 3 weeks that includes sleeping through the night.Good luck
My sister had the same problem with her son. Her son would use the bathroom in his pants or pull up because he had something to catch it...so when she was at home with him, she didn't have any clothes on him. Yep, she let him run around with just a shirt on, no underwear or pullup or anything, just bare naked. It worked because when it came time to use the bathroom, he realized there was nothing there. Now, of course, she had to watch him to be sure he wasn't going to go potty in a corner somewhere...when he had that paniced look on his face, she led him to the toilet and he had no choice but to go! This may not work for you and your son, but it worked for her. The other thing she did was punish him by making them stay home and inside until he'd go potty in the toilet. I think the fact that he didn't want to stay home all the time and the humilation of not having any clothes on had a factor in it working. Good luck!
Well let me tell you I had lots of trouble with my 4 year old.
He just learned! He loved hot wheels, you know the little toy cars. Well what I did was bought him a new toy car every time he would listen and go potty for me. It actually worked and after about 2 weeks he had so many new ones he loved and he just kept going potty for me without getting any new cars. My 7 year old I got her to go by taking away a toy each time she refused to go. I know it sounds mean but she was a mean little girl and it worked.
my son is 3 and were potty training him right now.we started a potty chart and he gets a star or a smiley face sticker for going pee and if he goes poop he gets a special sticker.if he gets so many stickers a week he gets some thing special like we have a little goody bag that has hot wheels and stuff in it or a day at the park.ive noticed with boys they are really hard to potty train it has to be some thing they want to do and can't really be pushed into it.vs girls they tend to be easy to train.good luck im in the same boat =)
How long have you been at this with him? Have you talked to the doctor about this...My nephew took 7 months to potty train and they figured out that he had a Bladder infection and he was probably associating the pain of urinating with the potty. That is why he wouldnt use the potty chair and would cry when they made him sit on it. You may want to talk to the pediatrician about this just to rule out UTIs and Bladder infections. Good luck
