I would stay in Haarlem and train (about 20 minutes) into the City. Haarlem is a very charming and totally Dutch small city. Amsterdam is a lot of fun, but hectic and international. Also it has become more dangerous with the influx of Muslims. If you go to Haarlem, try to stay in the Grote Markt at the Hotel Carillon.
