Help, need advice and opinions about my 23 month old autistic son?

I was told in June that my 23 month old baby has autism. He lost his speech in February, never responded to name, lines up shoes, rock, spins, walks on tippy-toes and has sensory issues with water, wind and noise. He tantrums and bites a lot. This came on suddenly. Danny was beautiful, happy, healthy baby and met all milestones. I finally got in to see a second Developmental Pediatrician yesterday as waiting lists are long. She says Danny has autism but may also have Degenerative Childhoold Disease which is a neurological degenerative condition. She feels he may have this because he lost speech so suddently and because he holds his tongue out now instead of chewing and the food falls out. Like he forgot how to eat all of a sudden. Hospital called today and want to see him tomorrow for a neurologist that usually takes 6 months to get in. I am sick with worry. Danny has ABA and OT therapy 12 hrs a week %26amp; starting program at hospital 1 day a week for autism group.Help, need advice and opinions about my 23 month old autistic son?
Barbara, my son has autism too- and what you described sounds all too familiar. Our son didn't meet all milestones though- he didn't babble as a baby, he didn't really speak until he was 2.5 though he did say ';MaMa';.

We just changed his school district and school because of the services provided at the new school that was not provided at his former district/school.

With autism- there are texture issues with food- our son will not eat anything spicy- even when it's not spicy to us- when we haven't added spice, he won't eat potato's because of the texture. He has many sensory issues.

Take him to all appointments to find out what is going on. If it is Degenerative Disease- they want early intervention which is the reason for the push. Even with autism- they will get things moving fast because it is vital to get help early.

Our neurologist told us that he sees more children for the possibility for ADHD and such- that when he has a case that comes through like ours- there is not wait time.

Try and get some rest tonight...and you guys are in my prayers!Help, need advice and opinions about my 23 month old autistic son?
I had a feeling- our son does the same thing with foods- spits them out- particularly potato, anything he says is spicy- when to us, it is not.

Good luck to both of you!

One thing is for sure, do all the research you can about autism.

If you haven't already done so, here's a link to get started:

Once your son is old enough, I would suggest you find a school that specializes in working/teaching autistic children.

My nefew (who's now 14) does some of the same things. He runs up and down the halls on his tip toes, gets angry when babies cry, doesn't really socialize on the same level as other people. Just recently, he started taking medication.

You may want to try and find support groups and/or finding a forum and voice your troubles with them (try http://www.autism-pdd.net/forum/forum_to鈥?/a>
I'am so sorry hear this.
Your son is definately autistic. Even if he does have Degenerative Childhood Disease, you are getting the right help. Sounds like he is getting the right services for his needs right now. You may want to find other moms with children who have autism. Also, take some time for yourself and your marriage. This has to be extremely hard.
Talk to as many people as you can, and take advantage of any resources available in your area. PUSH the schools to provide him with everything he's entitled to. Best of luck.
