What advice would you give about things cats will do out of instinct and things I'll need to teach them?

They know how to do just about everything already. A nice clean litter box, and maybe a little delivering of cat to box, should get them using it properly.


Females in particular know how to hunt mice (and birds outside). Chasing a small object exercises that instinct.





Teach them to be touched all over, on tummy too. Lift lips, gently moved their ears around, in preparation for later vet. exams.


Get the spray water bottle to teach them what Not to scratch. Get proper scratching surfaces, bring in a branch or two if you can. Supposedly they like a vertical surface to sink nails into.

Instincts are: Find food, go to mom, eat, drink, and to scratch, Hiss when mad or frightened, bite if they are aggrivated. Taught things are like: Litterbox, come here, don't scratch furniture, .
